Hi everyone,
As you can see, i’ve ran a cable from the router to the PC, so the PC is 100% fine as far as connection goes, however all other devices such as phones, laptops, etc. are still stuck with weak wifi. It’s pretty weak even in the living room, where the TV is.
What can i do here to boost it?
I’m a total networking noob, but i was thinking of getting some cheap second-hand router, sticking it behind the TV and using it as a “bridge”, like shown here, this ensuring the PC still has the wired connection and all other devices get the wifi from the router in the living room.
Is that a done thing, is it possible or am i just talking non-sense?
Would really appreciate any input on this or other better solutions.
Thank you.
I think instead of a “secondary router”, you’re looking for an Access Point (AP). You could give that a search, or mesh WiFi stuff, or a WiFi extender. I’m not a pro, but these are some products that seem like they might help with your scenario.
It seems like a better course of action would be to try to get the router closer to the TV though, since that’s in a more central location. Is that not possible?
If you’re in an apartment, it’s probably proximity to all the other wifi access points that your neighbors have that’s the issue. Generally, all the access points come set up on channel 6 by default. This leads to everyone’s signal stomping on everyone else’s and no one getting a good signal. Your wifi issue could be fixed as easily as changing the channel your access point is set to.
You can get a wifi analyzer app for your phone that will tell you which channels are clear, then set your existing access point to that channel. Might solve your issue without having to buy anything.
