Hello everyone, I’ve just bought a condo and I’m trying to figure out how this thing is wired up. They had a coax going from the wall to a power inserter to a splitter to the modem. I put my modem in there and that seemed to work alright (~200 mbps, but it did cut out about once per hour…which is worrying). I thought the splitter was just there to accommodate direct linking his TV in addition to his modem so I removed it. I tried also removing the power inserter but the modem didn’t function without it. This morning, it was only running at 6 mbps and now it seems to be not functioning at all.

  1. Am I frying the modem somehow? Was the splitter in place to attenuate the signal or something?

  2. I see that the power inserter is supposed to provide power over the coax. Does that mean there’s an amp somewhere? I looked around but couldn’t find it.

  3. What the fuck is going on here?

Redundant questions I know. Anyone know what’s going on?
