I love to read but feel like I have to pretty much be in peak mental condition to fully appreciate a novel, which is pretty rarely. Meanwhile I will waste hours on reddit no matter how tired, sick, or sad I am. I wonder why because they’re both reading. Maybe because looking at reddit is more skimming? It does feel like the brain processes it differently. I wonder if other people here feel the same.
I don’t really have trouble focusing on reading books or feel like it takes a particularly large exertion of effort. However, I certainly don’t feel like all acts of reading written words are exactly the same in terms of how my mind is processing info.
Give a book the same attention you give your phone.
Reading a novel, for me, brings me into another world. I love to lose myself in books. Reading posts on Reddit is fun and interesting, but it doesn’t draw me in.
That depends. Mostly because it is activating a social part of your brain. While I do read a lot of posts here I tend to comment on them too. I live in close proximity of my husband who is disabled and I work from home and don’t get out much. I like being social. He doesn’t.
Sometimes like now I’m waiting on my book to become available at the library. I was in such a mood to read it I started a series knowing book two was over a four week wait. Finished book one in a day.
I have ADHD so I’m now stuck in waiting mode. I even tried a audiobook I really wanted to read. Only read a hour and a half and now I’m still waiting. Went from reading everyday to nothing.
Waiting mode sucks for readers.
