I think it being Linux and open is why they don’t (at least I ) care. Most PC gaming is forced to be behind Microsofts operating system and that’s what valve is getting away from. Them using Linux as a base just earns em alot of props because that means it’s only a “walled-garden” for those unwilling to learn Linux. It’s also a bonus for those afraid of PC gaming, steam OS acts as a safety net and makes it easier to get into it without the baggage of windows.
