Recently I have moved from Windows 10 to Linux Mint. It’s been great overall, the system is super smooth and I have a lot more customisation and sophistication over some options with I really preffer. However, aisde that there has been quite some issues with gaming for me.

Not a single game ran out of the box without some kind of tweaking. And most of the times they are stuck on “Launching” or “Running” without any signs of life or no matter how long I wait. The inconsistency here is what I really want so ephesise, beause sometimes they JUST work for no reason what so ever and it drives me crazy because I know I haven’t changed anything! However I’ve noticed that all of the games (if you manage to open them the first time) afterwards run consistently again and again without any issues until a system restart.

To name a specific case, I’m dealing with Witcher 3 right now. The game ran before easily and really smoothy and I gave been running this game with mangohud gamemoderun %command% and with Lutris too. Sometime afterwards I’ve noticed that when I press play it immediatly truns off, this was solved by mounting windows drive (Witcher 3 is on this drive, and yes I know it’s an NTFS but it worked for me before so it’s not the issue here) onto media and giving it permissions together with setting windows options to unmount every disk after shutdown. However, again, this issue again seems to be completely inconsistent. I have looked at content_log.txt but it doesn’t even seem to notice that I’m running or at least trying to run Witcher 3, so I guess no problem there. One thing to point out btw is that I’m also sometimes getting a Wine popup error saying “file not found” but I don’t know if that’s ralated. I have also noticed that my steam is a bit strange, every time I Steam—>exit I can’t get it to open the second time and instead I have to kill the process or restart the OS to get steam to open. I also sometimes get “Processing Vulkan Shaders” which sometimes takes from 2 mins all the way to 20 mins and after this most of the times the game finnaly starts, tho this process is completely random for me.

Things I’ve tried to solve this issue: changing my drivers from nvidia-driver-535.129.03 to 525.147.05 and changing them to xorg open-source drivers (I’m running RTX 3060ti with ryzen 2600, 16gb ram if it helps), skipping the launcher with –skip-launcher, running with or without mangohud + gamemode, restarting steam (as I’ve said before), verifying the integrity of game files (seems to get stuck on “resetting install script” and start button seems to be unresponsive afterwards), reinstalling the game, forcing and not forcing to use a specific proton version which at the moment is GE-Proton8-23, I also used an older GE version, clearing cache and changing region.

Any help would be very appreciated!

Probably not the answer you wanna hear, but is it at all possible to try witcher on your (presumably) ext4 Mint drive?

Or if you regularly have this issue with most games, just download a smaller one to your mint drive.
