It’s not necessary for all characters, but for some it absolutely is. Doom for example, if you don’t counter-pick him, he’s just gonna run over your team. If you don’t play a hard CC character like Ana or Cass into him, he’ll most likely just never die. However if you do, then that Doom player is gonna go on to make a Reddit post about how people always counter-pick. This is the same case for heroes like Hog and Ball.

But then there’s also the case of Rein, where he does have hard counters (ex. Bastion), that make it very hard to play Rein. But you also don’t HAVE to play a counter to win against Rein. You could have a whole team that doesn’t counter Rein at all, and still win. But if you have no CC, and you’re playing against Doom, you essentially just lose. He gets in, blocks, gets punch, gets out or punches in gets a kill and ults out. A good Doom is unstoppable when you don’t have a specific counter-pick.

What would you do to change this situation? Or is there nothing that can be done and those characters that require counter-picks are just badly designed?

There is no winning as you would have to get rid of every character for it to be no counter picking To explain this thought, for example, if you play mercy, she is counterd by hitscan, but there is no way to change them, as making everyone projectile isn’t fair. Overall, the point is that counter picking will never be fixed, but it is also healthy for the game.

Not only is it a core part of OW….it’s inevitable

People need to stop pretending like the game can somehow exist without it….it never has and never will….in a game with almost 40 heroes now…some of them are going to be really good against others

It’s probably going to be inevitable since its just how the hero pool works, but the only way I could see it is making those hard counters not as oppressive, just an opportunity to keep them in check if they are popping off.
