Hi,

I’m looking into extending an HDMI input to a different room using HDMI extenders via Ethernet. Unfortunately it is going to be too hard to use a new cable from room to room. Can I plug them in via ethernet via the wall sockets and extend them like that?

Bear in mind that full 4K HD with 4:4:4 sampling requires around 18Gbps of bandwidth.

You can send HMDI signals over Cat6/Cat7 cable using the HD-BaseT protocol. Lots of companies like Extron, Kramer and Crestron make those adapters, and provided your cabling is good quality then you’ll not lose resolution. These are point to point devices.

An alternative is AV over IP where you use a regular Cat5e/Cat6 cable run and dedicated encoders and decoders that stream the signal. Atlona and Wyrestorm make these and they’re pretty good - very low latency and a range of compression options. You can also attach a network switch and have a one-to-many setup or a matrix with multiple inputs and outputs.

Thank you all for the answers! Seems like I have to try out an HDMI to IP transmitter and receiver.
