Comparing the team that went to the Super Bowl and the team currently constructed, am I the only one who thinks this team is better and more talented than the 2019 one?
Obviously it’s still very early and there’s still a lot of football to be played to make a real judgment, but with the acquisition of Chase Young it got me thinking of the 2 teams.
The 2019 team offensively didn’t have Purdy, CMC or Aiyuk, Deebo was only a rookie, and Trent Williams wasn’t on the team. I think we can all agree Purdy is significantly better than Jimmy as the main point.
On the defensive side of the ball, it may be controversial and maybe premature to say this but I think that this current line is better with the addition of Chase. Even when Dee Ford was healthy, he was purely a speed rusher. Chase is just a freak of nature monster who I think is better, and Hargrave as a pure pass rusher is better than Buckner imo. Along with obviously rookie year Bosa vs reigning DPOY bosa. LB Dre and Fred are much better players now. And at safety, Huf is a AP safety and Gipson is a baller as well.
We will see just how far this team goes, if at all they reach or surpass what the 2019 team did, but from a talent perspective I think this team is better than the one that went to the SB. What are yalls thoughts?
The 2023 team is average .15 EPA per play, the 2019 team averaged around .07 EPA per play. The 2019 team was 5th in overall offense but the 2023 is literally doubling them up in terms of efficiency. Feel like that matches the eye test too.
The 2019 team was better defensively but you’d rather have an elite offense versus defense.
Much better offense (except right side OL), defense slightly worse? 2019 dline was unstoppable and still had ward, tartt, Sherman, moseley breaking out in the secondary. However there’s been a lot of brain drain in the coaching department, which is why this team has been less dominant.
