Would the group here recommend that I go ahead with this? My plan is to do what I can on my own in terms of fixes and get some stuff done with trusty mechanic close to me. What should I be expecting if I dm go ahead with it? Thanks in advance!

Do it. The M52 is a wonderful and pretty easy motor to maintain. The E39 is also a solid chassis.
