101·24 days agoThanks I’ll give them a try, EndeavoursOS is next on my list.
I know it’s dumb but I just really don’t like the name Fedora so I’ve strayed away so far 😅 Names matter

Linux@programming.dev•After 9 Months on Mint I switched to Kubuntu and I'm loving it!!English
16·24 days agoI’ve heard this is quite a mess to maintain.
Ideally I want to find the best out of the box solution so that I can switch friends and family over to when I feel they and the software are ready

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you think Trump will fall because of the new Epstein emails?English
4·25 days agoHonestly I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve gotten to that point.
They’d claim it’s AI generated and move on to ‘more important thigns’ like the money wasted on foodstamps

7·25 days agoSame and how well a game runs on the Steam Machine will likely be in all benchmarks and devs will optimise their games for Linux (Steam OS)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are your preferred alternatives to Amazon?English
11·2 months agoFinding what I want on Amazon, and then looking it up and buying directly from the supplier. It’s usually cheaper too.

Linux@programming.dev•ZorinOS 18 has had 300K downloads in just one week!English
61·2 months agoa big issue for open-source is funding, I don’t see having a pro version as an issue when all you get for pro is basically a few more themes and tech support.
It’s still a giant leap in the right direction switching from Windows

Linux@programming.dev•Zorin OS Review – The BEST Linux Switch from WindowsEnglish
2·2 months agoIt’s GNOME with a lot of hand holding and guidance, which is what your average user is used to and wants. Most people here aren’t the target audience for Zorin as we probably already run Linux

Linux@programming.dev•Zorin OS Review – The BEST Linux Switch from WindowsEnglish
62·2 months agoThey seem to very much focus on a smooth UX for people trying Linux for the first time. It seems to be made idiot proof, so it won’t frustrate new users and would meet all the needs of the vast majority of users
I’d be curious to rewrite some of the malware we made in class and see if AVs would pick it up now.
Most of them didn’t make any network calls etc. they would just mess with your files and system Things like Set background to Justin-Bieber, play Justin-Bieber randomly, we were very mature
The best security is to limit your risk vector.
Like you said Anti-viruses aren’t some magic bullet, in university a bunch of us wrote Malware and wrecked each other’s lab computers or did things like having the whole Lab’s computers CD trays open at 10am every morning.
The AV didn’t pick up any of them and we barely knew what we were doing.
Afik, AV’s mostly scan for known threats

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is it so hard to get Nvidia GPUs working with Linux?English
2·2 months agoBest you can so is test it for yourself.
I switched to Linux Mint in February and my 4070 has given me no issues.
I just had to set some configs in steam so that it defaults to using my 4070 and not my iGPU, and the rest just worked

31·2 months agoAs long as the work gets done. People “slack off” in the office too, concentrating for 8h per day every day at work is just not possible for the vast majority of people.

Thanks solid advice.
I do care about why people don’t like cononical, but it’s a marathon not a sprint.
Every step in the right direction is a win.
I really want to find a nice distro that just works and that I can eventually switch friends and family onto.
It might not be the MOST ethical or best distro, but it’s better than Microsoft and to me that’s enough.
