The Gordon Ramsay anecdote is actually really good, in that in my experience VC’s get a LOT of say in what your business ultimately becomes.

I worked with someone that was, in all fairness, absolutely clueless about what they wanted, and wanted some VC alongside their rich parents money. The VC took a huge chunk of the business, and ultimately their business launched as something that was completely different to what they thought it would be - because that’s what the VC believed would give them some return. The business went bust in less than a year and launched for maybe 2 months?

Much like how Ramsay says “your Jamaican restaurant is shit, I’ve remade it into an Italian restaurant because there aren’t any nearby”, taking a lot of VC money almost certainly means they’ll want an equivalent say in your business. It’s not free money, and it absolutely fucks a lot of people up when they take that money and realise that their dream isn’t theirs any more.

Animal Well is stellar. If I were Dunkey I’d just give up now and call it a win over the games industry.

The point is that some VP probably pushed for the use of AI, and a director and senior manager chasing promotion decided to deliver it, despite there being no clear use for customers.

This is sadly quite common, and I think by design in many places.

Rather than long, open roads having a 30mph speed and smaller residential roads at 20, the opposite is chosen, purely because councils know that they can put speed cameras there to make some money. Making roads safer through design costs money, and many roads where accidents are common are largely ignored.

It’s these tactics that feed into the hysteria that these measures are an attack on motorists. While I largely agree with the rules, many councils really take the piss. I was caught doing 24mph in a 20, but was able to overturn it because the camera was placed in the middle of a hill with a sharp enough decline to not make it legal to police.

They probably made a ton from that camera, all while the top of the hill is a small junction where people regularly crash - which is 30 and is only repaired when someone crashes into the traffic lights (not a rare occurrence).

I am extremely introverted, but working as a software engineer in a consultancy where the owner wanted engineers to be on the end of phones for clients was in many ways a godsend. The secret of calls is that everyone also hates it. The secret of eye contact is that the other person hates it too, so just do it enough to show that you’ve tried and that’s the acceptable norm.

You will never be able to block them from viewing stuff they want to see. They’ll either do it through their friends devices, on other WiFi connections, or at school where networks are hilariously open or easy to bypass.

The best thing, and frankly the only thing you can do as a parent is to be engaged with them. Make them think critically on subjects, and if something they parrot back is nonsense, call them out on it. Cast that seed of doubt in their mind. If they choose to continue to watch stupid shit, that’s their choice, and it’s only worth stepping in if it’s actively dangerous.

Don’t just get a second opinion. Call your doctor and tell them that you do not want to see that doctor any more.

Doctors don’t care if someone gets a second opinion. They do care if someone opts out of their care because their co-workers or doctors elsewhere provide better care.

I put Franks Red Hot on pizza all the time. It’s no problem.

Pizza isn’t owned by the Italians anyway. Many variants are decidedly American anyway, so it would be like a French person complaining about how the British cook a roast dinner.

Another reason is because it’s easier to close/change bus routes as opposed to doing the same on roads, so it’s a bigger job for Google to keep on top of. They struggle enough with roads, so closed bridges, paths, and parks can be a total nightmare - especially when councils or towns “forget” to update.

One thing I truly miss from the Winamp days of piracy was the live feeds. Anime, porn, music, some great adventures discovered from just browsing. It’s how I discovered Deftones, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Sindee Coxx.

IMO more people should be critical of the systems and tools that they use instead of shitting on the tools that others choose to use.

We do assume too much of our tools, but many people here are guilty of assuming that other OS’s are broken in ways that do not reflect the average customer experience.

Remote can exist practically anywhere.

My in-laws retired and moved to France, in the rural south. It is eerily quiet because no traffic goes near their house, and they are 30 mins drive from anything like civilization. They do have a small restaurant (that loves putting froe grais on everything), a hairdressers, a travelling doctor, and (weirdly) a bowling alley that doubles up as the local bar and a place to buy stuff - all for less than a hundred people.

You can get really remote in the UK too. Some parts of England are 30 mins from anything like civilization. Some parts of Scotland are only accessible once a day by boat, and if you go really up north you find wooded areas where people die because you’re surrounded by miles of nondescript woodland.

SteveO is the last guy from that group that you’d think would have a lasting career. His standup isn’t great, and he still does a lot of stunts that most fucking SUCK to do when you’re in your forties, but he’s happy, a nice guy to everyone, and seems to have found a niche that still pays the bills.

I’m shocked that Jackass hasn’t been picked up by Netflix or another streaming platform as a TV series. They’re available, they enjoy what they do, the filming is cheap, they’ve got people desperate to cameo, the music budget is apparently amazing because the bands involved love their music being used for Jackass, the list goes on. IMO it would be a great way to get the original gang around as cameos, and to get some of the solid newer additions from Jackass Forever a central role.

Oh, Enterprise is pretty poor. There were some solid ideas, but at the time it was just too big a departure from Star Trek for it to be taken seriously.

Now, if Enterprise were the lead-up to First Contact, the intro would make sense as it would be an early prequel to everything…

It’s absolutely NOT Star Trek, and whoever decided that it would match a series of Star Trek is a moron…but for a standard sci-fi show it’s a good song choice.

I have IBS, and while I’ve had many close calls I can proudly say that I’ve never shit myself. As someone that’s basically a flight risk for accidental pooping, as well as having heard these stories before in-person, I often wonder if more people have stomach/bowel problems than they’d like to let on.

I’ve honestly never understood why someone at Google or Mozilla hasn’t decided to write a JavaScript Standard Library.

I’m not opposed to NPM, because dumb shit like this happens everywhere. If such a package is used millions of times a day, perhaps it would make sense to standardise it and have it as part of the fucking browser or node runtime…

I remember my university orientation so vividly, because I was sat next to several people that were taking the “Game Development” degree. They spent the entire orientation talking about what consoles they brought with them.

Two weeks later, they were all gone. The course was arguably harder than my CS course, based on some of the required classes they had to take. I think the dropout rate over the full degree was ~90%. CS was high, sure, but barely anyone actually graduated with the Game Development degree.

Game dev is hard, and I’m yet to meet a game dev that didn’t bemoan how utterly ruthless it was.
