There isn’t an ISO for Linux Mint with Xfce.
What I would try:

• Boot the normal ISO
• open a terminal instead of starting the installation
• enter sudo live-installer-expert-mode

It should boot the Debian expert installer, which lets you choose what DE you want to install. I haven’t tested this on LMDE, though.

Otherwise, install LMDE normally. Then do sudo apt install xfce4 and sudo apt purge cinnamon* muffin* nemo*.

So to get infected, you need to download and unpack a ZIP archive sent to you from an unknown address, then execute the file it contains? In that case, I’m not too worried.

Don’t use FreeBSD on a notebook.
Unless you can live without energy management, suspend, bluetooth, function keys and usable wifi speeds out of the box.

I fully agree, regarding Debian. I would never recommend it to any new user. However, every single distro actually targeted at new users doesn’t have this issue.
And if I hadn’t known about this issue before, I probably wouldn’t even have noticed that scrolling is a bit smoother after the adjustment.

Bonus: Windows has enough of these completely inscrutable mannerisms as well. Want to change the icon of a program pinned to the taskbar? You’ll find the shortcut file in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
Want to switch to a different standard browser? In Windows 11, you have to set that for every single file type a browser can open separately.
Want to write a lengthy formula in Excel? There’s a hard-coded 255 character limit.

Depends on the distro. On Debian I upgrade cause I know it works well. On Ubuntu I always had issues after an upgrade so I do a clean install don’t use Ubuntu anymore.

Kali is the least secure of all distros, it runs everything as root and is meant as a tool to boot from an USB stick for pentesting, not for installation on your machine.

I’ve had less “just works” luck with OPENSUSE than with Arch.
