My biggest pain points with Linux have mostly been audio related. Audio is serviceable for general users but whenever it comes to either professional audio work or high end consumer audiophile stuff, Mac and Windows unfortunately blow Linux out of the fucking water at this point in time.

  • Adding a birthday field is not privacy invading in itself the same way brandishing a knife is not assault in itself.

Context matters. I’ve held knives before and it was completely inocuous. I’ve used knives to chop vegetables, to spread butter, to carve something out of wood, etc. If I pulled out a knife while in a heated argument with someone that’d be a whole other story, and I don’t think “I was just holding the knife, is it illegal to hold knives now?” would exonerate me from accusations of intent or threat to assault someone.

In any other context adding a date of birth field would be inocuous. You’re not required to use it after all. But in this context as I understand it, it is explicitly infrastructure for age verification, even if it is not age verification in itself.

  • This has been my exact issue with native Linux music players ever since I switched to Linux like a year and a half ago. I’ve been using MusicBee via Wine pretty successfully but not without some (mostly minor) bugs. No FOSS devs seemed to anticipate my niche use case of needing my Weasel Walter / Mary Halvorson / Peter Evans albums, my Weasel Walter / Mary Halvorson album, and my Weasel Walter / Peter Evans album to all sort into Weasel Walter’s discography while simultaneously the first two sort into Mary Halvorson’s discography and the first and third sort into Peter Evans’ discography, nor did they anticipate my need to tag an album as both Free Improvisation and Harsh Noise rather than sorting it into a separate third “Free Improvisation; Harsh Noise” category lol.

  • As someone who switched from Windows to Linux Mint about a year ago and had a pretty easy time adapting, sometimes I see the advice that beginners should use an immutable distro instead of Mint and am inclined to disagree, but then I remember the Linux Mint subreddit has like, at least one person a week who somehow manages to accidentally install the GNOME desktop and makes a post like “Wtf I started up my computer and it looks weird now why does it look like this” lol
