    1. this is a good draft to be a QB needy team and the “cost” to get one of the top ones would not be as crazy.

    2. we have Aidan who at minimum will be a very good tk excellent backup for the team for the next few years at least.

    3. we have Jimmy G on the roster who is already a cost heavy vet, adding another one doesn’t help us address other areas of need in FA.

    4. we are heavily invested in our offense as is. Getting a certified starter QB would elevate it (we have seen what standing pat does).

I’m not sure anyone is saying Aidan can’t grow into a certified starter, but we have a limited window with the roster we have. Getting another young QB is not a bad thing, in fact it should be a good thing. We’ve seen how important the backup QB position is in recent years.

Kansas City is not exactly one to compare to as they were a solid team when they traded for Smith. They went 11-5 year before and 9-7 year he signed, 11-5 year after.

  • This is like throwing darts at a dart board. Champ was Director of Player Personnel with Bears at time of the draft. This is link, he was tasked with turning the card in once the trade was completed (he did not make the trade). While I understand the connection Fields is going into his final year of contract so you have to make a decision on if you’re paying him or not. Since as of now the team doesn’t have a certified starter locked in, the trade done at make much sense (Cowboys recently traded for Trey Lance which made sense as they have Dak as starter). With JF’s performance (the Bears didn’t do anything to really help him) it doesn’t help things either.

For me in our current position before end of season it makes more sense to draft a QB in 1st or 2nd. This way you have a young dynamic QB that can be brought in new and you have up to 5 years to decide if “he’s the man”. The mid round pick would be much better spent on OL/iDL/LB/DB IMO.

This was posted and discussed a couple of times. I’m not sure what you think will happen in the draft where you think the 6th or 7th QB will be selected at 11 (current spot), that is QB 3/4 territory.

I’m not sure where you’re reading everyone wants to “dump” Aidan, it’s not here. Most people acknowledge that Aidan is a good QB, but has his limitations. Those limitations. He has the rest of the season to improve, but he may not. If he’s not our certified starter then it makes sense to discuss a future starter QB. That doesn’t mean “drop Aidan”, it means keep Aidan as a backup at minimum and possibly a starter while rookie gets their legs. Having two good young QBs is not a bad thing to have.

  • There have been many recent posts about the upcoming draft, in reality it’s MUCH too early to even tell. Raiders are in position to possibly draft QB3/4 right now as it stands. This likely means Daniels, Penix, Nix or McCarthy depending on how you view the QBs.

Lots of things can and will change between now and end of April. If we retain AP then Daniels seems like a strong possibility due to their connection from ASU. He can throw to all levels and is a very dynamic runner. His size (weight) and some decision making may cause some to pause. Penix is a big armed left handed QB (who I think Buccs will make a strong move for), he has an injury history and accuracy at times may cause some to pause. Nix is super hot right now. Has a big arm, can be mobile if needed, some will question if it’s a system fit or if moving from SEC to Pac12 to face “lower” competition will hurt him. McCarthy is another WB people are hot on. Of course in their run first system have we seen enough of his QB talent to equate that to NFL.

Penix and Nix will be playing against each other this Friday in Allegiant so the team should get an at home look at two of the selections.

  • He’s not going to me close to Maxx, that isn’t his skill set. He’s a big power rushing edge that should probably take some snaps inside. I never expected him to do much this season as he had a lack of camp and offseason due to injury. Next year and year after are what I’m watching for. We’ve seen flashes of what could be with him and I’m all for that. He needs to work on pass rush moves outside of bull rush. I understand peoples disappointment in his output, but I’m not sure the team was expecting a lot (he was supposed to be behind Jones). I hope with a full healthy off season we see the beginnings of a long career.

While Koonce saw similar limited snaps, his PR skillet was much more diverse (IMO). He had a few good moves in college that have translated to NFL.

  • Nothing goes our way? If we crush it that means things went our way. It’s much too early to see how the draft will fall as prospects will go up and down as we lease up for the draft. There are a handful of QBs that as of now are late 1 early 2 “worthy”. Daniels, Nix, Penix, etc may all be available mid to late round 1, early round 2. It’s much too early to fret about this though so just have fun with rest of season and looking at different prospects.

  • It’s why like Penix (have watched him play). His injury history is one of the only things that worries me. That’s for the doctors to decide though. Him or Daniels (in my post for this discussion) would\should have an immediate impact to the team which is why I’m high on getting a QB this year. Let’s be real the last high round QB we drafted was Carr. Now folks are scared to jump for a QB knowing it’s a need (I really like Aidan, but thus far hasn’t shown he’ll be the long term solution). At the early onset this may be one of the best QB classes on recent times, so take your shot when and while you can.

Saying the above doesn’t mean we ignore defense either. Without a bonafide starter at QB however it won’t matter who we get on defense unless they also score 20 a game. We have multiple other picks in the draft to pick up players for iOL/iDL, CB, LB and anything by else we could imagine. This on top of FA. Personally I’m tired of trying for a “mid” QB thinking that will be good enough. The only reason I was semi OK with Jimmy was thinking the team would draft one of the top QBs last year. Now we here we are basically in the same position as before.
