No, if a Democrat president had done something remotely resembling one of these things: media, courts, Congress would be in a frenzy to stop it, before you could say executive order.

I mean I can understand the “controlled ineffectual opposition” narrative, but I don’t buy the “Democrats’ inaction means they are just as evil as Republicans”.

In addition to siccing the military on protestors…

    • Harris would totally apply tariffs to every country in the world.
    • Harris would totally pardon everyone who paid her enough and said good things about her.
    • Harris would fire huge chunks of the government recklessly without any regard to what they do.
    • Harris would push for a Big Beautiful Bill to withhold funding from judges that would try to hold her administration in contempt.
    • Harris would start a cryptocurrency token designed solely to enrich herself.
    • Harris would get into rapid back and forth arguments on Twitter (or BlueSky I suppose) with other influential people.
    • Harris would try to make every issue about herself, including Canada’s election.

She would totally do all of these things in the first few months, because both sides are definitely the same.

  • “Just show up with guns and the police will crawl away on their bellies and you’ll win” is as painfully naive as the “Just show up with flowers and the police will put down their riot gear and greet you with hugs and songs”.

Thank you, this needs to be said and highlighted. Whether violence or non-violence should be threatened depends on the context, there’s no one-size-fits-all method or easy way to success.

  • Friday’s protests would have been more or less ordinary compared to the many other stories across the country, of communities coming together denouncing raids and demanding release of immigrants detained for various reasons.

What made this one special is that Trump raised the stakes when he decided to call the National Guard against it. The newsworthy headlines were:

    • The arrest of SEIU leader David Huerta
    • The burnt Waymos
    • Journalists shot by the PD
    • Newsom and Trump’s exchanges

Whereas the grafitti and individual confrontations within the crowd didn’t get much attention, so those sorts of actions didn’t serve a purpose besides turning attitudes negatively. Chances the people doing that were provocateurs or people that wanted chaos more than to support the cause of immigrants or resistance of fascism.

Thought experiment: if protestors were more violent in LA this weekend such that a couple cops had died, would that have been any better?

I don’t like cops but I say no, it would have been much worse. Media got so sad over those poor autonomous cars, that a dead cop would have been the only headline coming out of that, resulting in more of a crackdown from the city and more of a copaganda stance from the mayor and Governor. Trump would bring tanks and stuff down Alameda, we’re all worse off. Showing up but staying peaceful is a call on Trump’s bluff.

  • I watched this episode last night and I found Robert struck a surprisingly optimistic tone. It suggested to me that Mr. Reich has more of a sense of trust in the American system than I do (and that could be because I’m not American).

On one hand, my gut tells me that sitting back, looking smug and saying “Trump’s approval rating on everything is through the floor” is not going to fix anything and is not going to stop the administration from trying to assert the Presidency as a dictatorship.

On the other, when courts had come to the conclusion that Trump’s “trade deficit emergency” tariff power was illegal, was a rare moment of Trump that might actually be put in check for once. It felt like a turning corner, and what I can hope for is that Americans learn the purpose of what democracy’s nominal guardrails were supposed to protect against, by seeing what happens when you let someone enact Republicans’ pipe dream. As Robert said, Americans are learning “from first principles” on why we don’t make President’s kings (the Unitary Executive Theory).

If democracy survives, this is the Republicans’ ship that will sink with Trump. Perhaps Democrats will follow Republicans down to ruin (as a matter of fairness and decorum), but they have right in front of them a golden opportunity to reform themselves, if there ever was one.

  • First off, specifically to answer your question, it is to ask for more time before your start date because you’re in the process of “moving to a new place”.

It’s a rough situation, but you more have to focus on what went wrong and learn from that for next time. Rather than stress too much upon what you could have done to prevent whatever, because there are some (as you say, bullshit) things you just weren’t able to anticipate ahead of time.

Now at least you know the jobs are out there, it’s not an impossible task to land one so you can do it again. Your next job might end up being an inperson instead of remote, whatever, be flexible and just be ready. Have time on your side.

Also, if you’re in Vancouver and this sort of predicament is about to happen again, DM me, and perhaps we could figure something out.

  • The English + Undefined issue is indeed a nasty issue that makes half of the content disappear for a reason that’s not easy to figure out. It really should be a separate checkbox of whether to show or hide posts where the language is not labelled. I do think that Undefined is selected by default now, but might still get unselected if the language setting is clicked and changed.

For those people saying “Ctrl+Click, should be obvious”, that won’t work at all on mobile web UI.
