  • I have a nighttime race (5K) on Saturday, so no long run that morning. I plan on getting some easy miles in though.

If the weather cooperates I plan on doing a long trail run Sunday morning (18ish miles). Current forecast is dry, but freaking cold (34F). I have a trail race in February I would like to do (5-hour 4.3 mile loop challenge race), so I need to get some trail miles in. Kind of difficult when sunrise is at 7am. No trail running in the dark!

  • I did a trail 50K in March that was a Marathon/50K, where there was a decision point for folks to decide if they wanted to do 31 or 26. I personally did the 31 (more like 33.9, hah), but some folks stopped at 26.

There are number of ultra challenge things in my area that are multi-loop type things. Many folks don’t make it over 26.

Specifically there’s a 5-hour challenge in Feb that I might do, hoping I can do enough loops to hit 26 before getting timed out.

Trail races are different from road races obviously. Potentially more elevation change, more technical, potentially stream crossing… etc. Not exactly something to go in expecting to get a PR (if you’ve done road races).

  • Busy weekend with kids and other social events. So I might be at 0 miles for the weekend, which is kind of depressing. My last 0 mile weekend was in August (vacation in the Caribbean). Have to go back to January to get the next 0 mile weekend (ski vacation).

Looking at my training calendar, all my 0 weekends have been vacation related (with one being leg injury as well). So this’ll be my first non-vacation related 0 weekend.

I might have to figure out how to get some miles in.

  • Complaint: Darkness at like 5pm is messing with my head. And it’s messing with the cats, they are all looking at me at 5pm and saying “yo dad, it’s dinner time, feed us!”

Uncomplaint: Trying to put together a workout plan, to do some leg/core strength exercises. I just need to find the time to actually do the workout. We put down a rubber floor in the basement, so I’ve got a nice place to do the workout. Just not enough time in the day…

Uncomplaint: My son has at least three soccer games this weekend, and they are early, so I’m probably going to miss both weekend runs. Which is not bad! My body still kind of hates me after the marathon, so I’m (mostly) fine taking some additional rest. Maybe I’ll try those leg/core workouts…

  • There was a guy in the final miles of the MCM (in Crystal City) who had a big tent and he was handing out Fireball Shots in plastic cups. He was playing Pitbull’s “Fireball” on repeat, complete with a sign saying “I’ve had this song on repeat for 6 hours!” and “Bad decisions made here!”

But that’s probably not the “fireball” you meant? :)

I saw a guy actually grab one. I’m pretty sure I would have vomited and died if I’d taken one.
