  • You have already been paying Google for that 6+ hours before even a penny came out of your account - you’re just been paying in data. We have to stop pretending Google is some good guy that left an open platform in the world and just said “if you use it we’ll show you some ads.”

Ads aren’t even the main revenue stream for Youtube, data is. All of these points about “paying for a service” become moot the moment we acknowledge the value of the data Google is farming from our interactions. This is how we’re paying for Youtube. If you choose to buy Youtube Premium, understand that you’re paying to not have ad interruption. You aren’t paying for Youtube, because that was already happening, you’re just paying for the convenience of avoid ads.

  • Don’t be disingenuous. We are already paying for that service, in our data and attention.

It would be an entirely different story if paying for Youtube Premium immediately opted you out of participating in Google’s data-mining and data-selling, and if paying for Youtube Premium removed not just the overt ads but the algorithmically-manipulated advertising content as well (what is the effective difference between a Pepsi ad and a Good Mythical Morning video titled “trying every new Pepsi flavor”?), but it since it DOESN’T do those then we aren’t talking about paying for a service - we are talking about a company asking for every penny in our wallet for a service which we are already paying for.

  • Yes, those are countries, not single states within a country. Different things.

edit: ya’ll are acting so fucking weird in this comment thread. Jesus Christ I don’t even give a shit about the size of America or the US/EU pissing contest, I was merely and correctly pointing out the non-equivalence of the items being compared. Holy shit get a fucking life if you give two shits about the topic itself, goddamn. The hate boner some of you have for one country or another to the point of spite downvoting and intentionally misinterpreting shit is fucking ridiculous.

Could have been rival gangs killing each other in the house for all we know.

But I think anything of substance or concern would fall comfortably under the “environmental factors” I already made caveat for in my original comment

I mean, since the paranormal doesn’t exist unless the people in the house died due to some kind of environmental factor then the number of people who died there is completely irrelevant to the new residents, and does not in any way increase their likelihood of harm.

Really it just lowers the rent or mortgage, an objective win for the new residents.

My friend, my dad used to watch that show all the time, so I have seen a lot of it.

The 2 idiots 1 keyboard scene isn’t “one of the only bad scenes in the show,” it’s literally one of the single most entertaining moments of the show.

And that’s not retroactively calling that scene entertaining, it is meant as a scathing insult to the abysmal quality of the rest of the show.

I loved my father, but I constantly questioned his intelligence being able to sit through that drivel.

If you disagree with my opinion, that is okay, but I promise you are not going to be able to change it

  • I don’t like FromSoft games personally, but I can recognize that they are well-made and aren’t problematic in the ways that other major AAA studios are.

So I’ll just acknowledge that of course there will be some notable exceptions, despite my hyperbolic use of “all” in my original comment. I’m a huge fan of BotW and TotK and Nintendo certainly counts as a AAA studio, but I think those games are exemplary and also non-problematic in the ways other major studios are. But despite these very real and very notable exceptions, I think my statement still stands pretty well as a general rule.

Oh and the only Santa Monica games I’ve played are Twisted Metal: Black (2001) and God of War (2005) so I’ll simply abstain from an opinion on them as it doesn’t seem fair to me to judge them based on experience that is now two decades old.

edit: also I see you were downvoted and while I know that doesn’t matter, just want you to know that I didn’t downvote you and I don’t think you said anything inappropriate or off-topic so I wish whoever did had not.

  • Assuming we’ve read the same study, that study also showed the exact same benefits you’re describing could be achieved with regular yoga or meditation; it seems to me the real benefit is getting out of your own head and devoting yourself to something other than your internal monologue for awhile.

But beyond that, any health benefits are entirely an aside to whether or not the philosophy itself holds up to scrutiny, which no religion I’ve encountered does.

Finally, I don’t believe in rules for thee, not me. They are welcome to present their beliefs in the marketplace of ideas as well. I believe in the power of veracity; I am not challenged by false ideals. I’m not anti-proselytizing, i believe in proselytizing the proselytizers.
