  • Wildly untenable concept in modern society…

I’m sure it would work great in a video game or something, but In the real world, this shit goes crony AF guaranteed.

We don’t measure aptitude or ability in our society, we absolutely suck at it. A person’s ability is measured by what pedigree they purchased at degrees R us, or worse, by how articulate and verbose they were when typing a resume. Occasionally, ability is measured by how well someone likes a person even…

Competence is valued in a very select few enterprises. Trades, IT, and at higher echelons, math nerds… That’s about it…

  • A couple quotes…

Be who you are and say what you mean, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.

God, give me grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, Courage to change the things which should be changed, and the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.

Both are difficult in terms of original source, but the best quotes usually are ;)

Point is, there’s three classes of problems. Most are type one - not my fucking problem.

Type two is what you’re talking about here, your problem, but you didn’t cause it. I’ve found that like 90% of these require serenity, because you can’t fix stupid… You kinda just gotta consider that until the light bulb comes on I guess? I’ve never had any issue with this one personally, it just always seemed self evident.

I’ve always struggled with type three, the things that are my problem and I caused them. That’s the shit I dwell on, because you can’t take it back, and sometimes, you can’t fix those either. You gotta swallow the pill on the fact that you did a stupid…

You weren’t the guy doing the stupid, ya know?

  • Encephalitis is caused by viral infections. Our immune system usually suppresses said viruses, and HIV takes away the ability to suppress them.

This happens with a lot of illnesses… thrush, Tuberculosis, fungal infections. HIV allows a lot of stuff to have far worse impact than it normally would.

That’s not quite the same as HIV causing them… Pedantic maybe, but since we’re talking about words meaning things… ;)

  • Genuine question, you won’t even bat an eye at someone who isn’t terribly concerned about flu shots and doesn’t get one, but anything about COVID boosters is “OMG why you no just do what they want?!?”

A lot of the hate on COVID shots isn’t based on COVID shots, it’s based on the frenzied insistence by some people that everyone else must get one.

The insistence is just as baffling as the resistance in my opinion.

I didn’t get a COVID shot this year for the exact same reason I didn’t get a flu shot, because Walgreens is 45 miles from my house, I’m not making a trip there just for shots, and when we are in town, things like “do we have enough eggs and milk” tend to drown it out :)

  • My property tax is $1200 a year. Failure to pay that for a while (a year or three) could result in the state selling the house, keeping the overdue taxes, and paying me the rest (if there is any. Sometimes they get sold cheap).

The state can also buy my house from me under eminent domain, to put in a rail line, or power lines, or some other utility. They’d owe me “fair value” for it, but they basically determine what that means, and it could be significantly less than what i could sell it in the market for (but to be fair, taxes are based on “fair value”, and almost everyone quietly allows the state to low-ball their property value because of this).

It can also be condemned. If it’s egregiously not maintained and shows obvious signs of structural issues, or the property gets hoarded up and looks like a trash dump. This is much more common with commercial property.

There’s also civil asset forfeiture. If you’re manufacturing and/or selling drugs/weapons/etc. (as a random example. Any crime counts really) on a property, it can be seized outright with no requisite compensation at all.

HOAs ar often described as similar to asset forfeiture, but they’re closer to a tax siezure. The HOA has to have in its charter that they can fine members for rule violations, and the process for an HOA is the same as for overdue taxes, but with unpaid fines. The authority for HOA is entirely contractual, you have to sign a contract agreeing to those rules.

All of these are incredibly rare occurrences, and usually involve some sort of genesis, like an investor wants a specific property, neighbors hate someone, etc.

  • Very rough Google math (mostly because of “fuzzy” answers on the energy required and how you define space) suggests that the 1980 Mt St Helens eruption had enough energy to orbit three billion kilos…

I based that on the eruption being rated at 24MT, which converts to 100b MJ, and a minimum of 30MJ/kg being enough for orbit. Didn’t find a straight answer on escaping the gravity well, could be way higher.

That doesn’t seem right to me, but that eruption did, in fact, move the entire top of a mountain a pretty silly distance, so as ridiculous as it sounds, it could be accurate? I mean… 500 billion KGs of ash was spit out of it…

That’s the most terrifying thing I’ve ever googled i think. I feel like I don’t actually want to know the actual math on this. It’s fucking plausible dude.
