Yep, USA. Part of my potential plans were to go to Canada first, though, for their better relationship with other countries!
A fool for expecting it to clear up

Linux@lemmy.ml•As Ubuntu embraces AI, Debian discusses banning all AI-generated code
2·12 days agoThis is a bit reductive on the situation with Ubuntu side of things but I don’t know why you’re being downvoted since you’re not technically wrong lol… vibe-coding on a large scale always results in very poorly structured code unless significant manpower is used for manual review.
Thanks a lot! This is invaluable to know and look into before I ever begin to seriously considering uprooting my life. I wouldn’t mind going through the paces to attain a life I find desirable, but it depends on how prohibitive things are if the time comes to make decisions like this.
Saved, this is a really good thing to have on hand. Thanks for posting.
Do you know anything about the data behind this paper? Why was there a spike in rent costs in 1928?
Seeing Cowbee around after joining Lemmy has reinforced my belief that I’m doing the right thing by being ruthlessly patient and positive with others. That dude’s awesome, he recommended me, a total stranger, some introductory ML literature (and I haven’t had the time to read it yet…), which I’m sure he gets questions about very often.
(If you see this, Cowbee, thanks again! I’d love to chat some after I’m done reading what you’ve provided me. :) )
This sort of life being possible in China makes me desire immigration to non-major city areas over there. I only have concerns of freedom of information and access to the greater internet- censorship on a national firewall level is something I’m simply not able to tolerate.
IMPORTANT: I am an American with a public education, and have no real knowledge of what life’s like there in terms of freedoms. I’ve just heard things.
Would you mind going into a bit of detail about how accessing the greater internet works over there? That is, if you know anything. I think I am correct in assuming you are not currently residing there. Would love another’s take on this.
Reading after the edit. Honestly, if you ever switch from Kubuntu, just use Debian with KDE. Since this presumably isn’t going to be running games you won’t have to worry about potential NVIDIA driver bullshit. I’ve personally had nothing but strange issues with Kubuntu and software distribution but YMMV.
I kind of disagree. Cinnamon is fine functionally, and the software management is super easy, but it’s ugly by modern standards, let’s not kid ourselves. That start menu is pretty bad.
I mean, hell, Fedora SOAS is a thing.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Whats the deal with Omarchy linux? Hype or it is actually that good?
716·12 days agoWhy is this being downvoted? This is just a naive and curious post; you guys really shouldn’t fall into the Reddit habit of downvoting things that you simply don’t like to read, instead of doing so when things are hateful, factually incorrect, or bad advice.

1·1 month agoI do agree with this in theory. I just don’t know many ‘normal people’ that are going to only ever require those three things. (Totally with you on the AUR bit)
Same, I’d really love a link

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Has realizing that our time on earth is finite changed how you see life?
3·1 month agoHave a rant, it might help you feel less alone, IDK.
I’m pretty young, in my 20s. For me, COVID hit like a brick, both socially and physically, so I was pretty mortified about everything that was happening. It was probably psychosis, looking back, but I had this fiery intense fear of death. Anything that could kill me was avoided, and I holed into my bedroom in my parents’ house. I have always been scared of being harmed or dying, but this was just different (nowadays I’m medicated for OCD…).
Eventually I developed long COVID, and that certainly didn’t help. I think becoming disabled from that, though, was the biggest catalyst for how I think today, by a long shot; I’m not exactly chilling, per se, but I’ve a better grip on my mortality. It kind of kicked me into gear, especially thinking about how I took my able body for granted.
Anyways, to answer your question, yeah, mostly. My disability can be summed up by, “damn that took every drop of piss outta me permanently”, so since I’m unable to really go out and do much, I came to see every day as an opportunity to either learn or do good. Hell, if nothing else, I’ve got the time, everyone does. Turns out, I really like learning; it is pretty much the only thing that prevents me from excessively thinking about my bodily situation, death, or the cruelty of humanity. Being a really well-informed monkey feels good. I also learned that it feels really, really fucking good to do kind things for other people. Being kind rules. I just can’t explain how good it feels to help and do good. That’s genuinely my motivation to live; by the way, when folks say to “make the world a better place”, that’s what they mean! Something as seemingly insignificant as telling a cashier, “Thank you!”, is part of that!
I don’t think you have to be some prolific artist or anything to have a meaningful life. You’re cosmically insignificant, yes, but I find that line of thinking a tad childish (of course, no offense, just in nature). Your insignificance goes away entirely when you help others have a better experience, no matter the impact. A very small portion of humans alive today will ‘leave their mark’ in a way that is noticed by ‘a lot’ of people, and achieving that really shouldn’t be seen as necessary as it is right now. Your sole goal on this trip around the sun, IMHO, is to find enjoyment and happiness. Have fun, your personal life is literally what you make of it.
If your own personal circumstance feels okay, you’re doing all you need to. A loser is someone who sucks to be around, who drags others’ down with them- that does not seem like you. You seem to be living an average life right now, and that’s okay! Something to consider is that community will make you feel a million times better on a day-to-day basis.
(P.S. I don’t think this is ‘capital D’ depression, but I think your current line of thinking is an easy path towards it. 'Least that’s how I see it.)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Has realizing that our time on earth is finite changed how you see life?
3·1 month agoHave you tried more than one? I found out thru trial and error that pretty much half of them either do nothing or make me violently suicidal, and apparently those are pretty common side effects.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Modest laptop arriving, what new Linux distribution should I try?
31·2 months agoPersonally, I can’t stand using anything but GNOME on a laptop (the touchpad experience on GNOME is much better than KDE), so my personal recommend would have to be something like Fedora Workstation. I find the ~6 month version release cycle very nice, it’s a good balance between rolling and stable.

Super cool goal they’re achieving, installing this on my OG Surface Laptop. Thanks for making me aware of this.
