1·2 years agoThe best part of those machines was the warranty service, which I used regularly when I was supporting these machines in production.
12400 is a crazy value rn - $140 on amazon, and no e core shenanigans either
Honestly – your 9400f should be ok. You’ll get 80-90% of the performance of your graphics card. That’s not the end of the world. You’ll be good until you can upgrade cpu/ram/mb down the line.

1·2 years agoAlder lake is also cheap and plentifully available. I replaced 16 cores of sandy bridge xeons with a i5-12400 and it’s *so much faster* in every way.

1·2 years agoSame. M1 air and a 12400 desktop. Functionally, they’re both as fast as I need them to be, which I can’t say for the Sandy Bridge workstation I just retired.
I’m jumping from Ivy Bridge to Alder Lake at present… so jumping 9 generations?
opnsense seems to be made by people who don’t hate me, so I use that.

3·2 years agoBased on the experiences I’ve seen on this subreddit, the solution is to buy a floor to ceiling 42u rack
To be fair the windows model is more or less “Yes mr ransomware developer, you can do whatever you want”
That’s the key with these. My storage box has 16x3tb, all similar used enterprise sas drives, but I’ve got 2x raidz2s and 2 hot spares on top of it. Important stuff is backed up to a 8TB external or Wasabi. alternate between scrubs and long SMART tests weekly.
