True. I typically pin all the apps I regularly use with spacers to categorize them, so there’s maybe half an icon of left/right movement maximum with the odd unpinned app at the end, but I understand that trades in clutter others may not find desirable and doesn’t fit all workflows.

On top of @psilotop@lemmy.world’s bit about monitors today being bigger, multi-monitor setups are also more common. I haven’t used a single monitor system as one of my main PCs (work or personal) in at least a decade. Being able to “slam” down and left to hit Start is a big part of why the corner was originally chosen, but if that’s just gonna get you to some random position on the bottom of an adjacent monitor, you’re back to requiring mouse precision, and the button may as well be moved more toward the center to get average travel distance down.

If the situation really was “speeds like everyone else,” you’re right that it wouldn’t be a problem. 5 to 10 mph over is that range, maybe 15 in the right conditions. He posted himself going 96 mph in a 35 mph school zone (155 kph and 56 kph respectively for our metric brethren), which would still be a massive problem even without the school zone part. It’s extreme enough to no longer be about one incident but the mindset persisting behind it.

Obviously I don’t know your life and how much your livelihood might depend on it, but if it impacts your decision any, I think you should at least start dabbling in it. You can look at any rough edges you need to smooth over as investing in the ecosystem and, for any added effort that’s still too much to justify, drop any requirement for parity. Simple stylized graphics never go out of fashion, and the hardware crisis (which I think will last closer to a decade or more than a couple years) means the market will be even slower than usual to adopt the visual quality Unreal pushes for anyway.

I’ve not actually used Godot, but I’ve been following it for a while, and I think you should give it a go, especially for just “unserious playing around.” It’s widely regarded as beginner-friendly (as far as gamedev tools go), and yeah, while some people absolutely do not have the analytical mind you really should have for working with anything involving programming, you being in a position to do any scripting at all sounds like you’re at least most of the way there.

Wow, I’m really glad this topic came up. As a recent convert from Windows, it’s still muscle memory for me to yank out a flash drive as soon as the copy dialog completes. (Yes, I know ejecting a drive first is still the proper thing to do on Windows, but skipping that has not been an issue once in hundreds of cases.)

Yeah, and even if the raw capability translated directly to performance, a 30% to 40% improvement is still on the minimum side of what I’d want from a full system rebuild. That said, I do expect an X3D chip to grab me within the next couple generations, especially if it’s AM6. I tend to keep old PCs running in various roles for decades with parts interchanging some, so if I end up skipping AM5 entirely, that’ll simplify part compatibility down the line.

For the GPU, I’m mostly just hungry for VRAM now (without going to the AI/enterprise cards), and the 24 GB in the 7900 XTX was a big part of me choosing it. The only sensible step up from there is 32 GB. I’m not going to jump to Nvidia for that though, and given the whole RAM situation and AMD dropping off the very high-end, they probably won’t have viable choices for that either anytime soon.
