  • Katz even said it:

If Brunson can pull-up from steps beyond the arc, he can run even higher pick-and-rolls, which extends the court, creating more space for a defense to cover. Imagine a Brunson-Julius Randle pick-and-roll 28 feet away from the rim, where a defender knows he can’t go under the screen because Brunson will pop an open look in his face and the rest of the defense understands that if the point of attack doesn’t do its job sufficiently, then one of the best scorers in the league will throttle downhill for a trademark floater or an easy pass to his big man or a kick out to an open 3.

  • I’m happy with the reduced volume from deep if the percentages are closer to 34% and up, especially with the uptick (and flamethrowing) of shots from Brunson beyond the arc. Been saying for a bit that for a lot of defenses a Randle 3 is a victory on that possession, teams give him space beyond the arc because they’d rather take away him getting downhill, and I don’t know if it is heresy to say that we’ve seen many a night where the shot isn’t falling for him and then the rest of his game seems to fall to pieces.

I’m with you, I don’t think more bullying is the answer, but as many have discussed, where he gets the ball is just as important. One of the possessions last night that stood out to me, I think he was on the right wing beyond the arc, might have had Bates-Diop or Gordon on him, he gets the ball and starts backing the guy down from all the way there, don’t even remember if he made the shot or not. Where he got to, that’s not the problem, but how he got there has been part of why I’ve wanted to see him as the roll man where he can get some downhill momentum in the halfcourt, especially with how Brunson’s pullup 3 point shooting has been…I know that we get a bunch of switches into ISO from that 1-4, but we saw him make a great cut downhill and get a nice Brunson pass last night too, that needs to be part of the bread and butter.
