I would just be more specific on the “he wasn’t that good” angle. He wasn’t that good…for $40M/year. The management realized they weren’t going to be able to pay him $40M a year, while also fielding a good enough (read: expensive) team around him to make up for his deficiencies.
On the other hand, as he’s showing on the Bucs, he’s definitely a good value at like $8M/year.
“Fully guaranteed”
People say this like it means something more than it does. It’s almost like people believe that if it wasn’t fully guaranteed we could just not pay him after he got hurt. Which, of course, is incorrect.
The only thing that would change if it weren’t fully guaranteed is that we’d have an earlier out. Watson would still get paid this year, and he’d still be out QB next year. The advantage is that we might have an out after next year.
I think everyone watched the first quarter, turned it off, then figured the Ravens must have “handed” us the game.
If we didn’t spot them 7 in the first 15 seconds, the game would have been close the whole way and the narrative would potentially be different.
