CDs and cassettes from charity shops. You can pick up his quality cassette decks for bugger all.
People who buy Sonos/ Bose/ Insertanotherontrendname do not like it when they hear 30 year old hifi gear that cost 20% of their ‘system’ value knock it out of the park.
None. I went from sub and standmounts to floorstanders, then back to standmounts only. I will not go back to floorstanders and I most definitely will not get a sub again. Get the standmounts that suit your room and you will never look back :-)
Plus they look soooooo much better.
It never ceases to amaze me on the internets that people continually refer to mega-artists as ‘underrated’.
Talking of underrated (or maybe under appreciated), Colin Hay is the one who fits this bill the best IMO.

Maaaan! That collection of old Donkey Kong consoles on top of your speakers is amazing!
I have only experienced remorse when buying pieces of equipment I haven’t listened to first. I will not do this again.
Listen to them first and make up your own mind. My speakers are 20 years old and still sound great to me. Come to think of it my amps are probably 30 years old and I wouldn’t change them.
If it was me:
60-70% source and amp(s)
30% speakers
…and a little bit on DIY room treatment.
If it is your first system try to go second hand.
ALWAYS try to listen to equipment before buying.
My speakers go down to 50 Hz, but boy do I experience the music.
I don’t think a sub is the answer here. If your system is not exciting without a sub, it is unlikely to excite you with a sub. A sub will just extend the bass, not change the overall sound.
I would start with room acoustics/ positioning and if this doesn’t work then try swapping in different pieces of equipment to see if it makes a difference.
Not really. There are some terribly recorded CDs around but not too many IME.
I find Bowie stuff generally ok. Depeche Mode generally sounds incredible to me.
What is really one of the worst is Radiohead’s The Bends.
‘You have the best times in the worst places’.
Very cool! I love the old ‘industrial’ look far more than today’s stuff.
