Yes I know his legacy is more than cemented but nobody should be immune to criticism, you cant tell me even if he goes 0-82 he should still be considered a top tier coach. Just like players can be past their prime so could a coach. He hasn’t really done much since Kawhi left the team, the Derozan/Aldridge team didn’t achieve much, and as much as we are still in a ‘development’ and experiment stage for Wemby, this can’t realistically be the best case you’d expect. At what pt do we say “Maybe he isn’t the best coach for this team” or “Another coach could get more wins than him with same roster”?
Pop has already admitted that the beginning of this season is very hands off, wait and see. He is intentionally letting his players go with the flow of the game and calling limited plays. Do y’all honestly think Gregg Popovich DOESN’T know we need a PG? Or that Tre is better? Of course he does. But that’s not important right now. We aren’t winning a championship with Tre Jones as a our PG so let’s figure out what we have on our roster. Who fits with Wemby, who can play around him, etc.
“I don’t want to follow a road map,” Popovich said, “because there is none.” “He’s doing some things that are really special,” Popovich said. “He’s doing other things that I don’t want him to do, but I’m going to say very little to him now because I need to learn where he feels most comfortable on the court.”
Right now it’s basically “let Wemby do what he wants and let Jeremy and Keldon figure out how to play off of him.” When he feels like they know what they got, he’ll actually start coaching and calling plays and putting them in good situations.
