I keep hearing narratives for supporting Pete and the status quo, such as “never get tired of winning” after an uninspiring win, but fans are simply trying to have an honest conversation about the short comings and flaws of the team, and where we can go from here to be a legit Superbowl contender. It’s not that we are inherently pessimistic, but that there are certain expectations and the goal is to win a title. It’s absurd that that notion gets misconstrued to entitlement. Let’s be honest, the Seattle media asks Pete very soft questions most of the time, and ownership doesn’t exactly hold him accountable. We need to draft a qb and consider the future, as there’s a lot of talent on this team for it to be playing this poorly, and Pete isn’t going to be here forever.
The “regular season winning” discourse over the years just feels like a copout and almost condescending, we’ve been a one and done team in the playoffs for quite some time. This team has streaks and ends up failing to adjust schematically, such as abandoning running the ball or not using play action or screens, barely beating inferior opponents. I recognize wins are difficult in the NFL, but this team simpy has too much talent to play this poorly. Good teams aren’t this inconsistent, and I seriously question Waldron’s ability as a play caller.
Hell, even on the play Geno was hurt, the coaching staff was trying to be clever and decided to substitute offensive lineman (I presume for resting reasons in regards to Thursday night), I believe it was on the right side (either RG or RT, perhaps both?), as soon as that happened Aaron Donald took advantage (which is asinine considering the starting unit was protecting Geno well enough throughout the game).
The entire point is striving to win another Superbowl, not be in purgatory of good, not great for several seasons. I would take a Superbowl win even if it meant being bad for a few seasons.
End rant.
Winning a Super Bowl is hard.
The 49ers and Cowboys have been trying to do this again since the mid 1990s.
You can be consistently miserable each and every year you very likely don’t win a Super Bowl and refuse to feel positive about regular season wins or you can choose to enjoy the regular season wins and appreciate having a well run, perennial postseason franchise.
I choose the latter. If I just wanted to cheer Super Bowls, I’ll be a bandwagon fan.
