I think game of the year (already a pretty meaningless title anyways) should be reserved for games that are new and developed completely from the ground up. Remakes have work already done even if they rebuild on a new engine or do rewrites.
You can seethe all you want about it being a dumb take, it’s unpopular and I labeled it as such. I’d much rather see something new given that spotlight over a game that already had potential to compete for it previously.
I never argued sequels are better choices or not, I’d rather not see them win but it’s arguably a new game regardless how lazy most sequels tend to be. It’s not all sequels that are lazy and the lazy ones don’t tend, not never but tend, to not be on the lists anyways.
The award is pointless anyways and has zero effect on what I choose to play or pass on
