IF Washington loses to the Eagles, I expect Washington to make the following transactions at the trade deadline:

Washington trades Montez Sweat to the San Francisco 49ers

Washington receives:

  • 2024 2nd RD pick
  • 2025 2nd RD pick

When interviewed earlier this week, Montez Sweat sounded very diplomatic and like someone who welcomed a trade if it happened. He’s also a few years older than Chase Young which could influence Washington’s front office. Although Sweat has been more consistent, Young is a DMV-native seen as more marketable and with a higher ceiling as a player. If either were to be extended on a 3-4 year deal, Chase Young would finish that deal under 30-years old while Montez Sweat would be 30+ years old. This likely makes Chase Young the more favorable option to keep and build around - assuming both are healthy.

The 49ers are in Super Bowl contention mode and their defensive coordinator is a Ron Rivera disciple in Steve Wilks. Martin Mayhew is a previous front office VP in San Francisco and Rivera already has a strong relationship with 49ers GM John Lynch. Over the last few weeks, it’s become clear the 49ers are searching for an EDGE rusher that can compliment Nick Bosa and as we’ve seen in past trades - the 49ers aren’t afraid to send draft capital if they have conviction on a trade (Trey Lance and CMC come to mind). Another reason the 49ers are a good option for a Montez Sweat trade is that their coaching staff was involved with coaching Montez Sweat at the Senior Bowl during his draft year. They already have familiarity with him from that experience which is always beneficial when later revisiting a player joining a team.

Last year, Bradley Chubb was traded to Miami for a 2023 1st RD pick, 2024 4th RD pick, and RB Chase Edmonds. Denver only gave up Chubb and a 2025 5th RD pick. Montez Sweat not only has more production than Chubb but also doesn’t have the same injury history. Unfortunately, I don’t expect a 1st RD pick to be attached since Miami was in a unique situation where they had an extra 1st RD pick. However, the 49ers are once again expected to receive extra compensatory 3rd RD picks in both 2024 and 2025 which helps them lower the blow of losing a 2nd RD pick.

In all likelihood, in this scenario, Washington would be receiving a draft pick in the #60-64 range for 2024.

We won’t get higher than a 3rd for him. Dude will be a rental for like 10 games this year and then a new contract.
