TLDR; I’m trying to figure out how to convince my wife that getting a cheap driver’s car for weekend fun is a good idea.
Here’s my dilemma. I’ve always been a manual, RWD sports car guy in my teens/20’s. My wife has always been the “keep it simple and practical” car owner who’s owned 3 cars over 24 years of driving (a Camry, Escape, and Odyssey). Due to life and circumstances, I currently drive an older Subaru Outback that we’re both ready to upgrade. I’m ready to enter my mid-life crisis a little early and go back to my teenage/20’s car days. Obviously my wife wants to go practical and get something like a Honda Pilot to give us a reliable, long-lasting second family car.
So I’m thinking we get the Pilot or similar to daily but then also get a cheap, fun car. The problem is convincing my highly practical wife that getting a third car for fun is a good idea. I’m not thinking about my dream car or anything like that. Just something to have a little fun with, maybe even a small project car.
Sounds like a relationship problem, not a car problem…
I’ve never had to fight my wife on purchasing the things I enjoy. In fact sometimes she eggs me on and I have to be the “reasonable” one. If your wife knows that this is something important to you and that it will bring you joy, she should be supportive.
You just need to make sure it’s not something that’s going to immediately depreciate half its value or cost you large amounts of capital on repairs immediately. Most old manual enthusiast cars won’t depreciate much, and if you’re smart your search, you’ll find a good example in good condition
