Here’s the thing about deadline day everybody misses:
In other sports it makes a lot more sense for this to happen because of two things; the nature of prospects is so hugely different in the NFL versus other sports, and you need far more players to actually win anything.
Draft picks, especially higher ones, are much more valuable because everyone in the NFL is expected to be pro ready from day 1. That’s not the case in the MLB, NHL, or even the NBA.
And then secondly, how much is a singular player really going to help a team when you’ve got so many guys that go and play for your team in a single year. I wouldn’t know the exact numbers but I would guess somewhere between 60-75 players play for an average nfl team every season: one guy is often not going to be the difference maker
Not to mention there’s fewer games for these guys to play. You’re going to trade a 2nd rounder for potentially 9 regular season games? How bad is it going to look for the bears when Montez Sweat doesn’t want to play there next year and he leaves in free agency after the bears miss the postseason?
