I’d read that there was a game called Infiniminer where you would collect perfectly square blocks and use their materials to craft other square blocks and tools.

Minecraft is a clone of that game, and that is the best selling game of all time, selling 63% better than second place, Grand Theft Auto V. A difference of 110,000,000 copies.

So, what other games that were clearly rip-offs of other games, did everything better?

The original Legend Of Zelda was essentially a clone of this game called Legend Of Hydlide. That game never caught on the western market. Amusingly, Zelda killed that series twice in a way. The last game in the Hydlide series tried making the jump to 3D in 1995, which was indeed ambitious at the time, but it was garbage (extreme lag ruined the little gaming experience there was to get). The Zelda series switched to 3D in 1998 with Ocarina Of Time and it’s still considered as one of the best video games ever made.
