Watching Zach all season, it’s easy to see that the coaching staff has drilled into his head a single mandate – “Check the primary route and then dump off.” Kind of ridiculous that they were hoping to trade for Adams/Mike Evans, since Zach consistently cannot read through his progression past Garrett (who is on track to be murdered with the hits he takes each week). It’s also ridiculous that the staff has stifled all the creativity that made Wilson special in college.
The only time Wilson excels is late-game and it has literally nothing to do with having some champion mettle. It’s because those situations allow Wilson to roll from the pocket, sling the ball, play instinctively and (prior to last night) use his legs. He’s also flashed in hurry-up situations, where he’s able to bounce into a rhythm. I understand late-game situations, trailing, you’re throwing against soft zones and base defenses – but for the love of Christ, why won’t they let this kid play at a faster pace on certain drives. It’s obvious that if Zach came out every game with a 2 TD/2 Int stat line, the Jets would have 3 more wins on the season.
I’m sincerely curious if someone knows the reasons why the Jets trot out the same ineffective offensive scheme for 3+ quarters every game. Are they trying to win ToP and keep the defense fresh? Are they convinced that a ill-timed pick craters Wilson’s confidence mid-game? Does Zach need 15+ seconds behind center every snap to read a defense? It’s uniquely frustrating and as the Jets have rotated OC’s, I’m convinced that it must have something to either do with Zach’s mental mindset or Saleh’s game managing philosophy.
We already know what it is like when you let Zach just “sling it” for a whole game. Look at year 1 and year 2.
Awful interceptions, tons of them without any real increase in TD production.
