Considering people outside of very major worldwide cities can’t just demo an expensive amp… how do you take the plunge? For example, I have some (basic, I know) HD6XX’s . To be honest, they don’t sound all that amazing powered by an iPhone, PC or Schitt Amp. Is it just sunken cost that gets people to buy more and more expensive amps and headphones until it either sounds better or you’re so deep that you can’t back out?
I got frustrated by not being able to hear my music properly and at limited volumes. I kept wanting more.
Simple as that.
S12pro, littlewhite dac amp, w1 tips and a suite of well recorded songs.
I really got into it when I got a used pair of Blessing 2 dusks for $215. I did try out hd600 and focal elex later on, but honestly the b2d’s detail retrieval is so much better for me that it was hard to imagine why the headphones were hyped up so much. Yeah headphones can be more comfortable (but honestly the b2d’s aren’t that bad) and the headphones provide that soundstage effect and tonality that can give better immersion. However, headphones generally only have one driver while IEMs have a combo of various drivers that can allow for better detail, as far as I’ve experienced it. That detail is what justified the $ to me.
Amps and DAC’s have been figured out to the point where you do not need to spend much money on them at this point. Get yourself a clean amp with low distortion and pretty much any newer DAC you’ll be all set on that side. You do not need to spend much on the Amp or DAC. Then from there, as others have mentioned, you can experiment with different headphones. Or, you can just get a separate EQ and tune your headphones how you prefer them.
The HD6XX just isn’t that good, in my opinion. I had it for a while and tried to make it work with several DAC/AMP combos and it’s just dark and subdued to me. You should get rid of them and try something else.
As for your question, most people get into hifi because they want to hear music in an ideal way and that desire is worth spending the time and money on.
They are good because they are dark and subdued.
If you like that, sure, but I prefer my darkness served with more finesse.
Try them with a Fiio K7. I’ve tried my 6XX with amps and dacs from Schiit, Cavalli / Drop, and Topping, and the K7 brings out the best in them. $200 for a dac/ amp, and you will never need another.
