It’s heartbreaking. He seemed to be doing so much better with the sports psychologist. My guess is his issues require deeper psychological help than a sport psychologist usually provides. His new coping skills disintegrated under the stress of the finals. Bring in the serious help ASAP

Certainly earlier this season (I think during the clay?) there were matches where I really thought he was going to lose his shit but instead he did some big puffer-fish breaths out and seemed to calm himself down instead of destroying himself. I thought we were seeing a new trajectory of ‘emotion management Rublev’ and was quietly hopeful we’d seen the last of the knee/bollock smashing episodes. Sadly this does not appear to have been the case.

Progress with mental health is rarely linear. You can have dips reminiscent of the state you began with, but the difference is they’re dips and ideally getting rarer and less severe vs being a constant state. We shouldn’t write off his effort and the work he’s doing until we see a more longterm overview.

He should get his money back. A grown man doing this in front of the world is is a lot more embarrassing than just taking a lopsided L. Seriously, if there’s sober companions, maybe there are self-harm companions in his age range that could help.
