First off, I do not think the Spurs have Sochan in mind as the long term solution as point guard. Maybe it was their longshot goal that is obviously not happening, but now it’s all to get Sochan’s playmaking ability up to where he can be a starter on a good/great team. His offense is looking slightly better with a 40% 3 point percentage for the last 10 games (less than 2 attempts per game but still), but he’ll need to continue to improve his offense to an average NBA player level or playmaking to an elite level to make it worth having him play major minutes in the future when he returns to the 3-4 spot.
Right now the Spurs have 2 players who would be for sure starters on a good/great team, Wemby and Vassell. I think Keldon would be a solid 6-8 man on a great team who need a spark plug off the bench and Zach has shown his defense isn’t where it needs to be to match the starter skill level in the league, so he’d be a solid back up center option.
Figuring out if we have a core of 2 or 3 players is huge when drafting and looking at players to sign, so I’d much rather the Spurs figure out where Sochan will fit in now at the beginning of Wemby’s career rather than a few years down the road.
I think you are missing the point why people are objecting to it. We fully understand that this is skill development and not meant to turn him into a starting point guard. The reason is…that’s impossible. Starting level point guards on championship teams have played point guard all their lives. We get it. It’s skill development.
The problem is he has shown no sign of having those skills. Not ever. He’s starting from zero. It’s crazy to think that he can learn these skills at a level enough to be useful to a good team. His development is hurting the development of everyone else. He has no court vision at all. This leads to constantly making the wrong pass to wrong player.
You say Collins and KJ don’t look starters on contender. Well nothing from Sochan does either. His offense is looking slightly better is damning with faint praise. He should be getting these development reps off the bench where his mistakes will not hurt Wemby. And that’s why we are so upset. Every game 4-5 times per game Sochan ignores a wide open Wemby to make the wrong pass. That’s not something that should need time to get better at.
There is nothing to figure out. Sochan’s future role is as clear as than KJ’s and Collins.
it’s hilarious, even the title of this post is delusional. i’ve noticed a common attribute most of these people share is that they think the problem is as simple as most people not understanding the situation. and that once they leave their description of it, everyone will come around to their side. i doubt the majority of these people could even guess as to why people object to it, even though it’s been stated many times.
