I am considering purchasing an EV next year (VW ID4). Had a Honda Hybrid in 2002. I am wondering about people’s experience and their list of pro’s and con’s with EV’s.
For instance, I heard a month back or so that for vehicle registration in our state there is an EV tax = $200
It’s probably best to have a charging app which probably comes with a monthly fee. This is because not all cars can charge at all charging stations due to a lack of standardization.
On road trips be prepared to take a 30-40m break every 200miles (320km). I know my family members/friends with weak bladders will appreciate these frequent stops.
What other things/thoughts do people have?
TIA
You will need to be prepared for the hassles of the public charging infrastructure in the US. Additionally, if you don’t have a level 2 home charger or plan to install one, then I would not go EV.
Agree with Salategnohc16.
VW is literally one of the only stubborn holdouts to NACS adoption.
Road trips are just effortless when you have reliable charging.
Keep in mind that in the US, public charging on non-Tesla can be iffy depending on your state. VW is the only major manufacturer that hasn’t signed up to use the supercharger network.
That being said, 40 min break per 200 mi sounds right for an ID4.
Curious, why ID4? There are a lot of other BEVs that are objectively better
Based on the reviews, the 2024 ID4 is supposed to be a huge improvement over previous years. If you can not charge at home or work, I would not recommend an EV. As chargers become available at grocery stores, that suggestion will evolve.
If you can charge at home and have a less than 100 miles round trip commute, an EV is perfect.
If you want to go beyond 100 miles, you need a Tesla. Or wait until Superchargers are available for your car.
