If I did my math right. we’ve got 8 expiring contracts. Whatever happened to Mr. Empty the Clip? How are we not scrambling to make moves?
The best thing I can guess (and we’d likely never know) is that no good, self-respecting NBA veteran wants anything to do with this team. It will take us developing young talent to attract any big free agent signing.
In an era where players build their own teams and superstars recruit their cohort, Cade Cunningham just ain’t that guy yet. He will be, but we are years away from that.
I can’t imagine our less-than-loyal fan base helps things either. You guys don’t think NBA players read social media chatter?
Less than loyal? The fan base was on fire when the team started 2-1 and the crowd was electric on that opening home win. They’ve proceeded to shit the bed and caused people to lose interest and get understandably frustrated by horrible turnovers and very poor basketball.
Why scramble to expend assets (in which this team is currently poor, relatively speaking, thanks to having access to only one future 1st) to improve the roster in a way that won’t be meaningful and doesn’t fit the timeline?
Making a trade to improve an ineffectual roster into a sub-mediocre roster is what Van Gundy did when he traded for Griffin, and Weaver doing the same now would be just as unwise – or perhaps even more so, given that this team’s success (if it comes, as we all hope it will) will come with time and development.
I would incredibly shocked if wiseman and harris aren’t traded at the deadline as whatever they can bring in is better than whatever we can sign this summer. I would be down to re-sign monte morris and alec burks as they will be some of the best free agents this summer but it’s possible that weaver could find a good deal with a contender. we HAVE to re-sign killian & livers.
