Old version is still good though, they needed this update to get it on parity with how it was back then, and to be honest it could still be inconsistent with the lack of EAX / A3D / DIRECT3D

I am so old that I already had Half-life for free this whole time.

I *think* from back when I preordered Half Life 2 on the relatively new ‘Steam’ platform, back when buying digital was a pretty new/weird/untested way of distributing games. It’s been awhile but I’m pretty sure a perk for buying it on Steam was they gave you the whole Valve back-catalogue with your purchase.
