The season is about to get really, really ugly, really, really fast if nothing is done. That loss to Cleveland has to be completely demoralizing to that team. When Najee is taking questions and replying with answers like those, then there’s serious issues. The question is, what will they do?
I’m a Kenny fan, but even I’ll admit that there are serious issues with him. My one thought about his lack of progress is, how much of his development has been affected by playing scared because of the atrocious offensive line that he has spent his first 2 seasons playing behind? He clearly panics when under pressure and just goes with the safe option of dumping it off. But that o line cannot give him protection at all. So many times in the Browns game, he had a defender in his face the second his right foot planted on the drop back. Obviously he needs to improve. He needs to read routes better, and look for second options when his first option is tightly covered. He needs to be more accurate with his throws. But, I still give him the benefit of the doubt because he has spent his first two seasons playing behind the worst offensive line in the league, while being coached by an offensive coordinator who is widely considered to be the worst in the league.
Diontae is infuriating. How he gets $18 million per year to consistently drop balls that are right in his hands is incredible. I don’t know who his agent his, but they deserve a higher percentage if they were able to get him that contract. And along with that, the whole receiver corps is a mess. Diontae defines inconsistency. George loses his mind if he doesn’t get thrown to every down. Allen Robinson is the team’s most consistent receiver. In 2023. Yep.
I love Najee, but man, it is idiotic to not give Jaylen the bulk of the action. He has 129 yards on 9 rushes, but is Tomlin’s #2? That’s awful.
The defense is playing well right now. Boswell is still ridiculously underrated. Broderick is looking great. But aside from that, the team is an absolute mess. Management and coaching needs to step up right now, or risk completely losing the locker room. They are smack dab in the middle of a playoff race. That loss against the Browns in no way eliminates them from the playoff picture. But, it can legitimately have a domino effect if things aren’t corrected right now. Tomlin needs to act like a coach for once and make adjustments instead of just reiterating the same tired excuses over and over again. Open the playbook on offense. If Kenny can’t do it, then plan on moving on from him. But you can’t just keep allowing Matt Canada to draw up these horrible play calls of dump off, quick sideline route, repeat. Play some football!
The problem is accepting the fact we (Tomlin) are happy keeping the game close, needing a field goal or TD in the last quarter to take the lead, and then our defence holding firm or creating a turnover. Problem was today that our offence wasn’t able to get a field goal to take the lead, as it has in 6 wins this year, and the defence unable to keep the Browns from scoring (only needing a FG to win the game made it tough). Tomlin has admitted this team is not built to win from behind, but that means it equally is not built to put up lots of points.
Coaching, play design, and execution from all players, especially KP, is making it tough to win. Why Tomlin didn’t go to Canada and say, “run plays through Warren” is an indictment on his leadership. Everyone could see that every time Warren touched the ball, good things were happening. So, you ride the hot hand. It is the same when KP said the Browns played more zone than they expected. Surely, the HC can override the OC and say run more zone besting plays.
