3 months ago Valve said “Smurfing is not welcome in Dota” but its already like nothing has ever changed. The update that was supposed to reduce toxicity has also changed absolutely nothing.

Why is Valve even wasting its time with these things if none of them provide permanent solutions?

The solution has been there all along.

    Get good.

It’s that simple. In the last year I’ve had one game where it was an obvious Meepo Smurf, and they still barely won.

You are bad at dota. Get over it.

Valve should have ranked MM paywalled, a one time fee. And with that actual verification of the person, similar to how much online banking is done. Unranked is still free and open to all, but ranked is actually clean.

As someone that’s returned from not playing for about a decade, most of my games have a smurf in them and it’s fucking unbearable.

If I play with either of my friends, one who is high Legend with 5k games, and another in Ancient with 4k games, every game has 1-2 smurfs. It’s fucking unbearable and absolutely ruins the new player experience.

Valve could hover in all your games and you’d still suck ass. You act like there’s a smurf in every 50 match you play. You need a solution on how you see the game.

Yes, while in game there should be a AI that detects Smurfing, and lanes start to spawn super fucked up creeps to balance it out. Pretty easy Valve

I think smurfing is vastly overated. I play pos1 and when somebody is feeding me I have a good game and can go 20-1. Next game I can go 0-10. I am not a smurf

I think a global solution is very hard, but I can say. I am in immortal, and I’m sure if we banned all accounts with less than 1000 matches from immortal-ranked matchmaking, it would at least be a start.

I think unintentional smurfing is more prevalent than intentional smurfing and it’s honestly just down to how flawed matchmaking is.

I have low mmr right now with 4000+ hours. I get matched with/against people who are maybe 300 matches total. It’s immediately clear the skill disparity both in game sense and mechanics. Sometimes it means I stomp, sometimes it means I have a dud team. It’s so muddy, and the lower your mmr the muddier it gets.

I’ve never intentionally tanked my mmr but it’s not uncommon for me to go on massive lose streaks followed by massive win streaks and it’s honestly entirely out of my control.

I’ve said similar myself yet every time I bring it up here on reddit, I get downvoted into oblivion. How fickle this sub is. But for what it’s worth, have an upvote as I wholeheartedly agree with you.

The problem lies in the simplicity of creating brand new accounts after bans are issued. If people were unable to make new accounts after a ban, they’d think twice before smurfing or using hacks, knowing that they would not be able to create a new account every 5 mins and come back to reek havoc.

The one thing I liked about Warcraft 3 (birth place of the Dota 1 mod) is that the game required a CD key to play it. And if somebody got banned, they were forced to buy the game again to acquire a new key. If only Valve had such retribution in their arsenal.

I think everyone’s MMR should be reset to 0 at the start of every season. 20 placement matches, and you get placed literally based on how many of those 20 matches you won.

If you do want to keep MMR as a number, they need to find a way to measure individual performance within a team and as a result every player gets a different amount of mmr based on their performance. I think k/d/a with ward consideration would work sufficiently, with 2 assists being worth 1 kill, 2 de-wards being worth 1 kill, and any kills made within range of an observer ward result in an assist for the owner of said ward. At the end of the match, within a team, each player is ranked according to their k/d/a/w and the best performing player on the losing team loses minimal mmr while the worst performing takes the biggest hit.

if you can measure individual performance in relation to the team - you can much better identify smurfs as in their thrown games they’ll come up as the worst player on their team while their winning games they are the best. If that happens even semi-regularly, it would throw a flag for investigation. Sure, some clever and skilled people could probably disguise their smurfing even in such an environment - but it will be hard and would most certainly reduce the number of smurfs while also improving the matchmaking accuracy
