Hey folks, I’ve done the usual reading on generic steps on restoring a car that’s been sitting a while, but I’m looking for specific commentary on this car and what lengths you’d go in getting it road worthy. This 944T sat for 13 years with only fuel stabilizer, and being turned on and ran for a while twice a year and no other service beyond that. It was stored indoors and is super low mileage and mint condition otherwise- 0 signs of rust anywhere.
The purchase inspection pointed to leaks on everything that can leak (power steering pump, oil pan, transaxle, coolant) and brake fluid has turned to gel in the reservoir. The car runs with no issues. It was started up by the shop and PO so I didn’t have the ability to service it before starting it up. I was able to drive it around the block before towing it home. No hesitations and felt pretty good.
I plan on addressing everything the shop recommended (all fluids, clutch and brake master cylinders, spark plugs, strut mounts, and a bunch of seals/gasket jobs for the minor leaks) as well as tires, and I plan on doing the timing belt/water pump and accessory belts, but what else would you do given the situation? Is it prudent to drop the fuel tank and replace fuel filter and fuel pump without any indication of fuel issues (it’s a plastic tank)? How much does starting the car up twice a year help with the issues of storing a car long term?
Thanks in advance!
