This thought, that games are just a means of casual fun, treats this medium more like a toy than an art, just like any art, games have to convey emotions to the player, be it sadness, loneliness, or the simple sensation of adrenaline and more casual fun, but I see that there are many criticisms of games that deviate from the classic “move forward, kill everyone” (not that there is something wrong with this model), for being a interactive media, games can provide experiences that other media cannot, good cinematic games for example, that justify the fact that they are games and would not work in the same way in other media, can provide a harrowing and agonizing narrative with the objective of leaving you emotionally shaken, horror games aim to cause you agony, despair, in a way that other horror medias can’t due to being less immersive, games aren’t just about casual fun, and there’s nothing wrong with games that try to do something different and entertain the player in other ways.

Games can absolutely be unfun. We call those bad games.
