Zeus was awarded Finals MVP this year at Worlds, and I wondered how many times top laners have gotten MVP, compared to the other roles. So, I did a quick search:
- Worlds 2011 MVP: Shushei, mid laner* for Fnatic.
- Worlds 2012 MVP: I think no MVP was given. Correct me if I’m wrong. If anybody was awarded, it probably would have been either Toyz or Stanley, the mid and top laner of Taipei Assassins, respectively.
- Worlds 2013 MVP: Faker, mid laner for SK Telecom T1.
- Worlds 2014 MVP: Mata, support for Samsung Galaxy White.
- Worlds 2015 MVP: MaRin, top laner for SK Telecom T1.
- Worlds 2016 MVP: Faker, mid laner for SK Telecom T1.
- Worlds 2017 MVP: Ruler, bot laner for Samsung Galaxy.
- Worlds 2018 Finals MVP: Ning, jungler for Invictus Gaming.
- Worlds 2019 Finals MVP: Tian, jungler for FunPlus Phoenix.
- Worlds 2020 Finals MVP: Canyon, jungler for Damwon Gaming.
- Worlds 2021 Finals MVP: Scout, mid laner for Edward Gaming.
- Worlds 2022 Finals MVP: Kingen, top laner for DRX.
- Worlds 2023 Finals MVP: Zeus, top laner for T1.
*If I recall correctly, Shushei sometimes switched lanes with xPeke, but Shushei was the official mid laner.
By roles:
- Mid laner: 4 MVP (Shushei, Faker x2, and Scout)
- Top laner: 3 MVP (MaRin, Kingen, and Zeus).
- Jungler: 3 MVP (Ning, Tian, and Canyon).
- Bot laner: 1 MVP (Ruler).
- Support: 1 MVP (Mata).
So far, mid laners have received the most MVP awards, with both top laners and junglers closing in. It’s surprising to see that the bot lane barely have any MVP, with the top side getting most of the attention.
Who do you think was the most deserved MVP? Personally, I’d say Faker in 2013 and Canyon in 2020. Mata as well, but I think the award could have gone to DanDy.
Shout-outs to Ning and Kingen. They both had some rocky performances through the tournament, but were stellar right when it mattered most.
There was no official mvp award in 2011/12/13
Mata,MaRin,Faker won MVP for the whole tournament, finals MVP only started in 2017
