Not having to play extra matches or getting side selection is not a big enough advantage for someone who NEVER lost. What would they get out of it?
Would a bracket reset be good for viewership? Might be way too long for most people, and would lessen the stakes of the first set. If a team started with a 1-0 advantage that could result in a 2-0 dud of a final. I just don’t see many good solutions here…
If you bulldoze your way through a double elim tournament not even needing the bracket reset, 2-0 ing grand finals then you really didn’t need any advantage to begin with.
The way Valorant and Dota community views double elim as seeding most importantly. The players and rest of the community sees it all differently. If Swiss and group stage is seeding teams for top 8, then double elim is seeding for the top 2.
Maybe make the entire lower bracket bo5 and upper bracket bo3 which would help the UB team have longer prep and strat. You can see how JDG completely nullifide BLG when they played like 6 bo5s in 2 weeks.
They have to lose two times to be eliminated, same as every other team. I.e., the lower bracket finalist has to win two full matches over the upper bracket finalist in succession in order to win the tournament, but the upper bracket finalist need only win one match.
Who gives a fuck about them and what they get.
Double elim is better for the competition overall, as it mitigates a whole bunch of shit things about single elim, eg unlucky draws, single bad days, uneven brackets, civil wars, coin toss side selections (we’ve seen matches where the side selecting won every game, so the coin toss winner won).
It might not be good for them this year, when they’ve won every game, but it will be good for them next year when they slip up. It all evens out in the end.
Best of 7 final with a 1 game advantage / side selection for the first game for the winners bracket team
A bo3 just after the Bo5 if the team from loser bracket wins.
every team should just lose so they can play from the lower bracket since there’s no advantages coming from the upper bracket then /s
The problem with double elim is, for the casual worlds viewer which is a majority of views it’s too drawn out and “boring” plus it completely eliminates the chances of underdog stories like DRX. Or even what happened in 2018, such as fnatic, c9 and so on. Because if there was double elim KT would’ve done a LOT better.
