I’m sure this hypothetical scenario will be an unpopular opinion within the Giants community, but imagine if the Giants decided to opt out of their MetLife Stadium lease in 2025 (with a 12-month notice to the state of New Jersey in 2024), and planned to move back into New York. If the Giants do move back into New York, the only question is where in New York the Giants will built their new stadium. One would guess that a new Giants stadium could be in either Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Westchester County. or Long Island. Obviously, I left out Manhattan and Staten Island for different reasons. Manhattan because of the whole West Side Stadium fiasco in the mid-2000s, and Staten Island because… well… IT’S GODDAMN STATEN ISLAND!

As it stands right now, it seems highly unlikely that the Giants will opt out of their current MetLife Stadium, and that it will be the Jets (our opponent for this week) who will opt out instead. But what are your thoughts?

P.S.: For real, MetLife Stadium needs a retractable roof.

It was a massive mistake to not put a retractable roof on MetLife. As I recall, the roof would have added $200 million to the $1.6 billion cost. Given the likely added revenue from a year-round facility, that’s a relative pittance.

From what I understand, Wellington Mara didn’t want the roof because, to him, football was meant to be played in the elements. He died in 2005 and the stadium opened in 2010, so this might be apocryphal but I recall hearing that.

Whatever the reason, the open-air venue still seems a big mistake, if only for the fans. The stadium lacks any charm and feels sterile to me. But more egregious is the lack of covered seating. At the very least there should be cantilevered overhangs like a European soccer stadium.

unrelated but sterile is also how One World Trade Center looks to me. these two buildings went up around the same time and i always thought they made new york look like a lame modern simple place
