    The model numbers come from (or are encoded in) the VIN. For example, Porsches from 1981 on will have something like:

    WP0XXX91XXX1XXXXX (for a 911)
    WP0XXX99XXX1XXXXX (for a 991)
    WP0XXX96XXX4XXXXX (for a 964)
    WP0XXX98XXX7XXXXX (for a 987)

    etc.
