For me it’s horizon zero dawn/forbidden west. I’ve had people tell me those games deserved more love and were “underrated masterpieces” when they both released next to some of the most respected and praised open world games ever of Botw and elden ring.

Having played both horizon games for a little, I personally think they are ok but absolutely on the lower end of repetitive open world without much interesting substance as you go on in the game, forbidden west moreso than the original. I’d say for me they lie in between ubisoft open world and elden ring/witcher etc but definitely closer to the former than the latter, and they were overshadowed becuase people saw the other open worlds games as just better.

You did nothing wrong you simply suffer from the heights of expectations let me break it down for you.

    1. Other people play the game. Zero expectation. Turns out game was good. Everybody saying wow what a goated game. Result - Expectations become high

    2. You bought the game and play it, with already a rising expectation since the loading screen. Games turns out ok. But doesnt break your initial ceiling. Then you kinda be dissapointed.

This is nothing new. Same thing happening for, say, series or movies, or even anime or whatever

I agree with you mayne. Horizon is visually beautiful but very repetitive. I enjoyed it for a bit but got tired really fast. The RPG elements are just so boring as well.

I have played the first horizon just before BotW and it ruined that game for me. BotW felt empty, bland and boring compared to it.
