Mob grinders are still very good, but in order to save time they are often built in such a way that you need to AFK in a specific location in order to work (to remove spawn locations). If you have to AFK in a specific spot anyways, I guess you may as well be killing with your sword for better drops right?
Mob grinders are best when you are able to build them somewhere where they will work 100% while you are moving around and working on other projects. Unfortunately this usually requires a very hole to be dug to act as a mob perimeter, which is obviously a much bigger task than just building the farm.
