I look around the team and we don’t have too many glaring weaknesses. Our coaching is that garbage.
Our coaching is bad, but make no mistake, this isn’t a playoff roster.
The O line is finally coming together. We have a #1 WR and a top end TE and that is about it on offense.
On defense, Sweat is the only legitimate starter (the young DTs are growing but not fully there yet), the LB unit on paper should be pretty good but have underperformed (possibly due to bad D Line play) And most of the secondary has underperformed aside JJ (Stevenson plays high risk high reward and Gordon has been pretty good in the slot)
We are probably a WR and a DL/DB away from being a playoff roster, which luckily enough we could theoretically get with just our first two draft picks.
The roster is probably a 6-8 win team while we will probably finish with 4-6 wins.
We also have a great RB in foreman he ran for 900yards last year in 10 games? Another example of Eberflus being an idiot making him inactive in the beginning of the year
We were also prioritizing touches to Evans instead of Roschan for a few weeks and he isn’t even on the team anymore
Here it is right here:
agreed. it was not the talent-level that has lost many of these games. not by a longshot
the Lions game was a good example. we dominated that game so hard that no team in history ever lost a game in that situation
when the COACHES changed the plan, it went south immediately and we lost. and despite the utter domination, the coaches had the audacity to talk about execution
i could go point by point, position by position, and have done so before. but u dont need any of that. the last game vs the Lions is a microcosm of the entire fucking story
Our talent level is where it needs to be to compete most weeks against most teams, but it’s not where it needs to be to be favored against decent teams quite yet.
I actually kind of agree with OP. Yes bears fans overrate their players. So do fans of every team. Our roster isn’t a serious playoff team. But we are two historic chokes away from being 5-6.
Depth is the largest weakness on the team. Whenever 1 person went down it became a weakness.
What would Mike Tomlin do with this roster?
Obviously we’ll never know for sure, so let’s not argue about who is right and who is wrong.
I think we would be at worst 6-5 with Tomlin as HC. Possibly 7-4.
For sure, slam-dunk wins are GB week 1, Denver week 4, Detroit week 11
Possible wins - TB week 2, NO week 9
I’m not sure about Minnesota or Chargers
How many elite rosters are there right now? I mean flawless rosters. Even KC has obvious weaknesses. Miami has struggled recently. Denver has surged to a .500 record.
The Eagles might have the best roster construction, and the Lions are good but even they should be on a 2gm losing streak after yesterday’s game.
I’m not defending JF or saying we have an elite defense. I’m just saying a legit HC would have gotten more out of this team.
Tomlin? Ask a Steeler fan and they’d say with the Bears talent level the last few year, he’d be just as good as Trestman/Nagy/Eberfluss…maybe 1 or 2 wins better.
Bottom 5 qb
Mid to whatever rbs
Solid wr1, trash everything else
Mid te
Bottom 10 ol
Bottom 10 dl
Mid lbs
Mid secondary
Coaching is one of many problems. Remember when you guys thought our lije was going to be fixed when we got rid of nagy because you heard the word scheme for the first time
Stop assuming everything would be perfect if one thing just changed. You don’t earn the #1 pick by being a talented team. You don’t take the #1 pick and 100 mil in cap and stay a bottom 5 team because you’re a talented team.
No. It’s the players. Coaching might cost us a win or two, but we’re one of the worst teams in football for two years running because of the players. Most notably the QB.
There’s still a talent deficit on this team, but it’s not as bad as last year. Coaching has to be better. One way or the other
