I promise, I’m not a spy from Citizen. I’m just a curious guy who is new to the hobby. I often watch YouTube videos about watches and it’s very common to see “10 AFFORDABLE WATCHES YOU MUST BUY!” or a Teddy Bulbasaur video that says “This watch is super affordable & has an entry level price point” then the watch is $595. Hell, right now I’m watching a video about Citizen & the list is saying affordable is under $1000. My limit currently is $250 for a watch. MAYBE, if I save for a bit I’ll raise it to 300. (Disclaimer: I’m in Japan so $250 goes much further. I have a Seiko 5 cement for $120ish.)

I know we all come from different backgrounds and have different financial situations. “Affordable” for you may not be affordable for me. That is perfectly fine. I’m just very curious as when collections are shown in this sub, I like to Google the watch. Often times it’s a multi thousand dollar watch.

Thank you all & I’m looking forward to hearing your stories.

I used to want to buy all over the place at various price points, but then you end up with a bunch of watches you don’t really wear. Now I want to focus on heavy hitters and buy a smaller # of pieces / year.

Depends on what you are going for. Imo a watch should be below 300 or above 5000. The in between is almost always not here not there. Orient, Bulova, Chinese AliExpress brands etc. Can make a sub 300 watch that feels the same as a 1-2k watch in a high street store…

But then you get to 5-10k and thats where you start getting luxury brand recognition and feel.

I think it largely changes for where you are in life and what you can afford.

I started with an $80 invicta when I was in college and I loved. After I got decent job and saved up I bought a Sinn 104 for about $1500. Got a promotion and sold the Sinn to buy a Breitling for $3000. This year I got a generous bonus for closing a big job and bought a Zenith defy skyline for $5800. I never really set a limit for myself its always had to do with what I like and what I can afford. I’m currently looking at a Mido multifort big date right now thats $1200, despite being less than my other watches its still on my list, price doesn’t always mean better. Watches are very personal so just get what you like and don’t worry if you can afford APs and Rolexs, there are very good watches for cheap out there and your seiko is one of them.

    10k +/- a few either direction.

My DJ41 was 15.8k after tax.

My eBay navitimer was about 5.5k.

      That DJ41 is clean!

I just learned about the navitimer today and I think it is so cool. A little busy, but the slide ruler is unique and so useful.

I’m new to watches, so I’m spending a little more recently, trying to catch up, but currently only have 4. The average is ~$2k, but I’m considering a few purchases in the $5k-$10 range over the next year or so.

I’ve lowered my threshold I used to think $2K was unachievable when I wasn’t working

When I had my first job (20yrs ago) I was spending average $2K a month on luxury items (ie a watch or a guitar) sometimes more. Shit got out of hand.

Then around 10 years ago I started getting $500 watches thinking that was a sweet average spot.

In the last few years, I’ve sold most of and kept ones that had actual good memories attached.

My most recent watch was a Citizen Automatic that didn’t cost much, half was paid for by a bunch of ex-work colleagues that I worked with for between 5-14years. loved them a bunch and I think about them all the time when I look at it,at my new job…

    And I’m about to drop $2K+ on a watch…

As much as I need to as long as I don’t lose much on resale. Nothing better then wearing a nice watch for a year and then selling it for more than what you paid. Free hobby.

    I’ve spent a $1500 on a luxury brand watch a few times

It got to the point where it became an obsession constantly trying obtain more expensive watches more frequently

In the end i came to the conclusion that what’s the point of buying and Wearing luxury watches if you can’t wear them publicly for fear of being robbed or assaulted?

My luxury watches collection is very small now.

    Comfortable? Up to 500.

I think that, objectively speaking, no watch is worth more than that. Sure and Omega will have more attention to detail and a better movement and maybe even design than say a Casio.

But, I honestly get a bit grossed out when I see watch YouTubers saying “I’m rocking my Patek” or “This A. Lange is drool worthy” because…those watches cost the same as several houses! It’s undignifying. It feels like…not even ostentation because no one really cares what’s in your wrist, it feels like a form of posing and mocking how hard life is for those who can.

Ultimately, the main thing that matters in a watch is functionality. Telling time. If it can tell time more accurately or add a function that matters to you, then it’s worth it, but otherwise it very much isn’t.

Because otherwise, you’re literally buying bragging rights only. That’s ultimately what made Rolex because they’re not, believe me, an exceptional watch.

And if you’re like me…you like Seikos and Grand Seikos more than anything Swiss

I’m in Japan at the moment. I picked up a Seiko SBTH003 new for 3man and a vintage 6119-5401 for 1.4man. With the current exchange rates, both were a steal. I’m going to post pics of both this weekend once I’m back as there’s a 8,000 yen Casio I’m looking for as well.

My general range though is less than $300 for a yearly buy, but I have one Seiko Sharp Edge I bought in Ginza that was 100man last year.

I also have a bunch of <$50 Casio I buy whenever I get the itch and find something I like.
